“The contest for men over 35 years of age was begun in Houston in 1981 by Vince Janis who was then the owner of The Different Drum a popular leather bar.This contest was begun to show the men of Houston that you don't have to be a 21 year old college co-ed with a smooth and a full lions mane of blonde hair to be found attractive.

The Texas Bootblack Contest is a regional event held in Texas.
